چکیده

contributing to the fall in plasma albumin concentration may have included at least two factors-namely, rehydration with crystalloid solutions as the major factor and reduced synthesis of albumin associated with impaired liver function. Previous alcoholism may have contributed. Finally, Gundersen9 showed that in healthy diabetics intravenous insulin may directly cause a reduction in the plasma albumin concentration. Our cases suggest that plasma osmotic pressure may be an important variable in patients treated by large volumes of crystalloid infusions and that further studies are required to elucidate mechanisms of pulmonary oedema in such patients. ADDENDUM-Since this paper was first submitted crystalloid infusions in diabetic ketoacidosis have been the subject of some debate.10-"3 The existence of the phenomenon of acute pulmonary oedema is not seriously disputed, but the mechanisms and frequency of its occurrence are controversial. We were unable to make any assertions about the likely mechanisms in our patients or what made them unusual, "at risk" patients. It would be surprising if the condition was limited to young ketoacidotic patients; in older patients heart failure or pneumonia is probably often diagnosed in error.

Distribution of Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Mycoplasma salivarium in the synovial fluid of arthritis patients.

By use of a very sensitive nested PCR method targeting part of the strongly conserved mycoplasmal 16S RNA genes, Mycoplasma pneumoniae was found in the synovial fluid of 19/24 (79%) of rheumatoid arthritis patients, 6/6 (100%) of patients with nonrheumatoid inflammatory arthritis, and 8/10 (80%) of osteoarthritis patients attending the rheumatology clinic for drainage of joint effusions. It was...

Empyema caused by Mycoplasma salivarium.

Mycoplasma salivarium infections outside the oral cavity are rare. We describe a 49-year-old man with laryngeal cancer and right pleural space infection with M. salivarium. To our knowledge, this is the first report of empyema due to Mycoplasma salivarium.

Primary late-onset hypogammaglobulinaemia associated with inflammatory polyarthritis and septic arthritis due to Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

A case is reported of primary late-onset hypogammaglobulinaemia associated with a chronic seronegative, nonerosive arthritis, which was complicated by an episode of septic arthritis due to Mycoplasma pneumoniae. The patient had subcutaneous nodules which have not been regarded previously as a feature of the chronic arthritis associated with hypogammaglobulinaemia. The diagnosis of septic arthri...

In situ immunohistochemical detection of intracellular Mycoplasma salivarium in the epithelial cells of oral leukoplakia

BACKGROUND Mycoplasmas are the smallest free-living organisms; Mycoplasma salivarium and Mycoplasma orale are the most common species isolated from the oropharynx. Oral leukoplakia is the most prevalent potentially malignant disorder of the oral mucosa; its etiology has not been defined. Our previous study with DNA-binding fluorescent dye suggested the presence of mycoplasmas in the epithelial ...

Ultrastructural Changes during the Life Cycle of Mycoplasma salivarium in Oral Biopsies from Patients with Oral Leukoplakia

Bacteria in genus Mycoplasma spp. are the smallest and simplest form of freely replicating bacteria, with 16 species known to infect humans. In the mouth, M. salivarium is the most frequently identified species. Mycoplasma spp. are parasites with small genomes. Although most of the Mycoplasma spp. that infect humans remain attached to the host cell surface throughout their life cycle, we have p...
